Workshop weekend

17th to 20th October 2008

A do-it–yourself weekend

The aim of this weekend is to have a leisurely look at some of the dances and tunes that are published in the book called “The Playford Ball – 103 Early English Country Dances” by Kate Van Winkle Keller and Genevieve Shimer.

Dancers will be encouraged to each bring one or two of the dances that they feel confident to explain to the others. Joy Simmons will be the dance co-ordinator and a musician is available to play for the dance workshop.

Some time will also be spent on deciding what makes dances successful and how a new dance could be created.

Musicians attending the weekend will be able to practise the tunes separately and be supported by Peter and Susan Swann who will co-ordinate the music workshop. Whilst the dancers practise the dances the musicians will be practising the tunes.

Evenings will be spent together, when the musicians will be able to play for the dancers. They will also be joined by the students attending the violin making and stained glass window workshops which are taking place at the same time.

Dancers will be able to have a try at leading a dance within a supportive atmosphere of a small group with plenty of time for reflection.

Musicians will be able to practise tunes in a small group with time to deal with individual needs. Leading a dance will be voluntary, and Music will be distributed to musicians before the event.
